Positive/Negative Insects

This lesson is one that 5th grade on up can be successful with. We discuss symmetry and positive/negative space. I use a 9x12 paper and a half sheet of paper of contrasting colors. On the long edge of the half paper students draw the contour of one-half of an insect. Add several shapes inside the body if desired. Carefully cut on the line saving all parts. Lay the negative shape on the large paper, then turn the positive shapes over and match them to the negative. When everything is all lined up carefully glue one piece at a time.
